Broken Clocks
Tick tock. Tick tock. This is all Jared hears while trying to decide on the biggest decision of his life. He looks back at all the suffering and despair, he went throughout his brief life span of seventeen years. He says to himself nothing will get better and nobody understands as he glances down at the bottle of Vicodin and whiskey he got from the kitchen. He ponders about how his life would drastically improve if he escaped from everything. He finally makes the choice of ending it all right there. He pops four pills and drinks a glass of whiskey and falls asleep escaping the harsh reality that is life.
In the morning you see in the headlines High School Quarterback Kills himself on Channel 2 Action News. The school is shocked faculty along with Jared's former peers are in a state of disbelief and shock. Why would someone who had everything going for him kill himself? He was the quarterback for god's sake and had a full ride to UGA why in the hell would he kill himself. Everyone does not understand. How could someone that is so admired, talented, and inspirational just end his life at the age of Seventeen? Rumors and speculation spread like a wildfire it was a situation you would only witness in an episode of Gossip Girl. So many people making up lies about how he was crazy or how he had a drug problem. No one knew the real story. Even Jared's closest friends had no clue why he decided to kill himself.
As the day progressed people were trying to think of a possible reason why Jared killed himself. He couldn't be depressed people thought. Jared would always be cracking jokes, going to parties, and having a smile on his face there was no way that could be the case. A few people speculated that the reason he killed himself was due to his girlfriend Amy breaking up with him. No one could determine the true reason why he did it. Even the teachers could not come up with a plausible reason why a child with so much potential would abruptly end his life.
Two days later the funeral occurred. Everyone from Jared's High school attended, due to the impact he made on so many people. People could nog believe that they were even at a funeral for Jared because it felt like a dream. It was something you just could never imagine. As the eulogy was being given people were reminded of the service that Jared provided for the community along with his accomplishments. Jared was an Eagle Scout, a Quarterback, a 4.0 student, a child in almost every club imaginable, and lastly the most crucial piece of information that nobody knew Jared was a person that was dead inside.
Three weeks after the funeral the police discovered a suicide note left on Jared's laptop. The note stated why he killed himself. It said " If you are reading this it is evident that I have ended my life. You may be wondering why I would do such a thing. There are numerous reasons why I killed myself. Ever since Middle School I have been depressed and nobody knew about it. I was forced to do activities that I never wanted to partake in due to family expectation. All my life I felt like I had no control on whatever I did as well I just never enjoyed life. I never I got to do what I wanted because my family only wanted me to do activities that would help me get into college. Even that was never enough. My family only wanted me to be a doctor and accumulate a massive amount of wealth. I knew I would never be able to escape that. I had no other choice but end my life. You may ask why did I never ask for help? The problem in society is if you say you are depressed people stare at you and assume that you are some sort of freak. It is not socially acceptable to be depressed. People just say get over it or there is someone in this world that has it harder than you. I could just not allow myself to let people know. My life is already burdensome as it is I am a slave to my family and never truly being allowed to peruse anything I was passionate about, which is why I wish my farewell."
The thing about clocks is that you can tell when they stop ticking, but the thing about people is that you can never tell when they actually stop ticking. Jared stopped ticking during the second semester of 7th grade. If people knew this it could of saved his life.
